About the author

Born in London on August 9, 1799, George Payne Rainsford James became one of the most widely read English historical novelists of the 19th century. He built his reputation with works such as Richelieu and went on to publish a remarkably large number of novels, biographies, and other historical writings.

His fiction was known for dramatic settings, noble plots, and a style clearly shaped by the success of Sir Walter Scott. Alongside his literary career, he held the honorary post of Historiographer Royal during the reign of William IV and later served for many years as a British consul in places including the United States and on the European continent.

James died in Venice on June 9, 1860. Although his fame faded after his lifetime, he remains an important example of the once hugely popular historical romance tradition in English literature.
