About the author

Born in London in 1799, George Payne Rainsford James became one of the best-known historical novelists of the 19th century. He wrote across fiction and history, and his early success with Richelieu helped establish him as a writer of dramatic, carefully researched tales set in the past.

James was extraordinarily productive, publishing a long stream of novels and other works over the course of his career. Many of his stories drew on European history, chivalry, war, and political intrigue, and titles such as Richelieu, Philip Augustus, The Smuggler, and Agincourt helped make him widely read in Britain and beyond.

He also served for many years in British consular posts in the United States and in Europe. James died in Venice on June 9, 1860, leaving behind a large body of historical fiction that captures the 19th century's appetite for romance, action, and the past.
