About the author
Born in London on August 9, 1799, George Payne Rainsford James became an English novelist and historical writer known for bringing the past to life for a broad readership. He began publishing early, and his Life of Edward the Black Prince appeared before the historical novel Richelieu established his reputation.
James was extraordinarily productive, writing large numbers of novels as well as historical works. He was also active in public service, spending years as a British consul in posts in the United States and on the European continent.
He died in Venice on June 9, 1860. Although his fame faded after the Victorian period, he remains an important example of the 19th-century historical novelist whose books helped shape popular interest in medieval and early modern history.
