I am about to relate an adventure that many will find incredible, observed by a weary chronicler who once served in the courts of Europe. The tale begins in Venice during the glittering Carnival, where a modestly funded prince of a distant house lives in perfect disguise, sharing his modest lodgings with a trusted companion. Though surrounded by the city’s revelry, he moves alone, guided by a quiet melancholy and a mind tangled in contradictory ideas.
One night, while wandering the deserted squares of St. Mark, a solitary masked figure appears, shadowing their every step despite their attempts to lose it. The stranger speaks in a measured French, addressing the prince by name and ominously declaring, “He died at nine.” This uncanny encounter drags the narrator into a world of secret societies, political conspiracies, and a mysterious “ghost‑seer” whose powers may turn illusion into reality.

A fierce, brilliant voice of German literature, this playwright and poet helped shape the era known as Weimar Classicism. His dramas and poems combine big ideas about freedom, justice, and human dignity with real emotional force.
