Description

The story opens in the sweltering summer of 643 AD, when Egypt has just slipped from Byzantine hands into the swift, newly‑asserted rule of the Arab Caliphate. The Nile, unusually low, mirrors a land uneasy with change, and a modest caravan from the north appears on the ancient streets of Memphis, drawing curious eyes from the dusty, decaying city of the pyramids. Against this backdrop of shifting power and looming uncertainty, the narrator paints a vivid picture of a world where old traditions cling to the banks of a shrinking river.

At the head of the caravan rides a lean, silk‑clad Muslim merchant, his towering turban casting a shadow over a face marked by gentle thoughtfulness rather than force. Beside him, an Egyptian dragoman—a surly native of Memphis—guides the procession with nervous deference, his eyes darting between the merchant’s calm authority and the armed riders who flank them. Their uneasy partnership hints at hidden motives and cultural tensions that will shape the lives of those they encounter, inviting listeners to explore a vibrant, turbulent slice of early medieval Egypt.
