Description

A bustling street corner in Zaragoza becomes the stage for a lively comedy of misunderstandings and ambitions. A quartet of local gentlemen—Antonio, Lupercio, Mariano, and the flamboyant don Froilán—meander through cafés and bustling squares, trading barbed remarks about love, money, and the marching troops that threaten to upend their leisurely lives. Their banter reveals a tangled web of suitors: Pablo, a gallant lieutenant, courts the vivacious Jacinta while his rivalries with other hopefuls spark both jealousy and endless gossip.

Amid the clamor of militia musters and the chatter of townsfolk, the play’s characters juggle personal schemes with the larger, chaotic backdrop of a city on the brink of conflict. Their witty exchanges and exaggerated self‑importance paint a vivid portrait of provincial society, where honor, vanity, and opportunism collide in delightfully absurd fashion. The first act sets the tone for a farcical dance of hearts and egos, inviting listeners to savor every sharp retort and comedic twist.
