About the author

Born in Quel, La Rioja, in 1796 and educated in Madrid, he served in the army during the Peninsular War before turning to literature. After leaving military life, he worked in journalism and criticism and built a remarkably productive writing career.

He is best known as one of Spain’s leading comic dramatists of the 19th century. Britannica describes him as one of the most important and prolific comic playwrights in Spain, and Spanish sources note that he wrote nearly two hundred plays along with poems and journalistic pieces.

His literary standing was recognized by the Real Academia Española, where he became a member and later served for many years as secretary. He died in Madrid in 1873, leaving behind a body of work that helped shape modern Spanish theater.
