Description

Morley, a twenty‑one‑year‑old heir of an ancient German line now settled in England, finds himself alone in a sun‑lit chamber of a country house near Doncaster. Though the day is bright, a lingering melancholy tugs at his thoughts, prompting him to stare at the painted plaster, the scattered trinkets on his table, and the distant church weather‑cock. His mind drifts between the lofty aspirations of his soul and the more earthly pull of his flesh, a philosophical duel first voiced by Montaigne that colors every sensation he experiences.

As Morley wrestles with this inner struggle, his solitude is interrupted by the arrival of a charismatic visitor whose presence awakens feelings he has long kept at bay. Their encounter offers a glimpse of the tender, sometimes tumultuous, emotions that may bridge the gap between his lofty ideals and the practical world he inhabits. The story unfolds as a quiet, thoughtful romance that explores how youthful hope can clash with, and perhaps reconcile, the two spirits that dwell within us.
