Description

Within the stone‑walled convent of the Black Penitents, devotion and decadence coexist in uneasy balance. The order, meant for women seeking penance, houses two very different groups: seasoned penitents hardened by worldly excess and aristocratic novices whose lives have never known vice. Though the rules demand strict fasting and prayer, the cloister’s more lavish apartments and a separate “visiter’s table” reveal how comfort gradually infiltrates even the most austere vows.

Into this delicate setting arrives Marie de Clairvaut, a young noblewoman whose confinement feels more like a genteel exile than a spiritual trial. The prioress offers solemn counsel, urging her to turn away from earthly attachments, yet Marie’s thoughts linger on a recent, secretive meeting with Charles of Montsoreau. Their whispered exchange fuels a quiet yearning, setting the stage for a clash between the rigid expectations of the convent and the restless stirrings of a heart caught between duty and desire.
