Description

A bustling inn on the outskirts of Montigny becomes a micro‑cosm of a kingdom on the brink. Merchants, clergy and townsfolk crowd the doorway, swapping rumors of the Duke of Guise’s hurried arrival and the fate of the dreaded reiters. Their lively debate—part hope, part fear—captures the restless energy of a land torn between loyalty and survival, while a lone, sharp‑tongued youth watches from a window, ready to relay the latest triumphs and defeats.

Inside, the duke takes a rare moment of normalcy, sharing a simple meal of boiled beef with his close companions. Yet even this brief reprieve is tinged with urgency; exhausted men and weary horses echo the larger strain of recent battles. As the conversation turns to broken promises and looming dangers, listeners are drawn into a tense tableau where personal honor and the fate of Blois hang in the balance.
