Description

At Emberton Park the genteel rhythms of country life mask a growing anxiety. Sir Sidney Delaware, a proud baronet, has pledged a large sum to Lord Ashborough, trusting the assurances of a shrewd advisor. Yet the estate’s finances tremble on the edge of collapse, and the uneasy nephew who manipulates his uncle’s avarice adds an undercurrent of dread to the otherwise tranquil days.

When a sudden fire engulfs Mrs. Darlington’s house, the disaster quickly turns from tragedy to suspicion. The blaze leaves the household’s silver untouched—no melted pieces, no signs of ordinary ruin—while witnesses speak of a heavily‑laden stranger seen fleeing the scene. Charged with uncovering the truth, the diligent Dr. Wilton interrogates the servants, and Harding, the silent attendant, begins to sense that the flames may have concealed a calculated theft. The stage is set for a tangled web of greed, deceit, and hidden motives that threatens to ruin the Delaware family before the first act even ends.
