Description

Founded in 1135 by the saint‑loving Margrave Leopold III, the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz rises from the Austrian countryside like a living chronicle. Though it endured fires, invasions by Hungarians and Turks, and the sweep of the plague, the complex has retained much of its original medieval character—an unusual survival among monastic foundations. Approaching the cloister, visitors pass a Baroque façade crowned by a heraldic shield and a towering portico, beneath which a massive organ, installed in 1720, fills the air with resonant chords on special feasts.

Inside, the abbey’s inner courtyard opens onto a richly decorated world. A striking Trinity column, a graceful Joséphine fountain, and a small but impressive painting gallery showcase works from Flemish landscapes to Italian altarpieces. The adjoining museum houses ornithological, mineralogical and antiquarian treasures—including a rare Egyptian mummy, 16th‑century bronze statues, and a collection of old weapons—offering listeners a vivid sense of the abbey’s artistic and scholarly legacy.
