About the author

Founded in 1133 in the Vienna Woods of Lower Austria, Heiligenkreuz Abbey is a Cistercian monastery rather than a single individual author. It is widely noted as one of the oldest continuously active Cistercian monasteries in the world, and its published works grow out of the community’s shared life of prayer, study, teaching, and liturgical music.

The abbey became especially well known to many modern listeners through recordings of Gregorian chant by the monks, whose plain, meditative style brought international attention to the monastery. Alongside music, the community has also been associated with theological study and publishing, reflecting the intellectual side of monastic life.

When a book is credited to Abtei Heiligenkreuz, it usually represents the voice of the monastery as a whole: a tradition-minded yet still active religious house whose work connects medieval roots with present-day spiritual and cultural life.
