An Egyptian Princess — Volume 08

In the dim light of a royal sick‑room, the physician Nebenchari keeps vigil over the ailing Egyptian princess, Nitetis. Around the bed stand six Persian doctors chanting incantations while Atossa, the king’s daughter, slips in to press a gentle kiss upon the fevered forehead, only to be rebuked by Nebenchari’s stern gaze. Outside, King Cambyses rides through the desert, his thoughts as restless as the hooves that echo toward the palace.

Haunted by vivid dreams of ruined temples and accusing voices, Nebenchari wrestles with the fear that his own discoveries might brand him a traitor. By night he transcribes new cures for eye diseases, daring to amend sacred texts despite the danger of accusation from jealous rivals. As political intrigue swirls and his rivals plot to steal his work, the physician must choose between his oath to heal and the perilous price of knowledge.
