In a bleak, turn‑of‑the‑century poorhouse, a sturdy sixteen‑year‑old named Jed spends his days splitting wood and keeping the gates open for the local elite. He is rough‑spun and poorly clothed, yet his calm demeanor and quiet resolve set him apart from the other inmates. The Fogsons, newly appointed overseers, rule with harsh words and a cruel streak, making life even harder for those under their charge.
When the pompous Squire Dixon arrives with his equally unpopular son Percy, the atmosphere tightens further. Jed watches the spectacle from the gate, feeling both resentment toward the Fogsons’ tyranny and a flicker of hope that the newcomer might bring change. As the squire’s buggy rolls away, the young boy’s thoughts turn to the possibility of a different future, even as the oppressive routine of the poorhouse looms on.
