About the author

Born in Halifax, England, in 1863, J. S. Fletcher became one of the most industrious popular writers of his time. He worked as a journalist early in his career, and that grounding in clear, efficient storytelling carried into a long writing life that ranged across poetry, historical fiction, and especially mystery novels.

He is now most often remembered for his detective and crime stories, many of them fast-moving tales of murder, secrets, missing identities, and legal intrigue. Readers who enjoy classic British mysteries often come across his work for its strong sense of pace and its gift for turning complicated plots into entertaining, accessible reads.

Fletcher died in 1935, but his books have remained in circulation through reprints and digital editions. His reputation rests on both his sheer productivity and his place in the development of modern popular detective fiction.
