About the author
Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1863, Joseph Smith Fletcher was orphaned in infancy and later built his career through journalism before becoming a full-time author. He wrote under the name J. S. Fletcher and produced fiction and nonfiction on an impressive scale.
Today he is most often remembered for his detective and mystery novels. He was a major popular writer of the early 20th century, publishing well over 200 books, and his crime fiction helped make him one of the notably prolific British mystery authors of his era.
Fletcher's work ranged beyond mysteries into history and regional writing, and Yorkshire remained an important thread in his books. That mix of fast-moving puzzles, period atmosphere, and deep local color still gives his stories their distinctive charm.
