In the secluded village of Markenmore a grand, aging manor stands on a gentle hill, its many doors and winding corridors a reminder of a once‑glorious past. The long‑serving housekeeper, Braxfield, is a man of ritual—every evening at exactly eight he locks every door, hoarding the keys in his little chamber. His devotion to order masks a quiet anxiety that the priceless heirlooms scattered through the house might be stolen, even though the Markenmore family has fallen on hard times.
When two weary travelers finally arrive at the estate, the household’s fragile routine is disturbed. The brothers Guy and Harry, along with their sister Valencia, each carry their own secrets, and the ever‑watchful Braxfield finds his carefully maintained world suddenly uneasy. As night deepens, whispers of missing objects and uneasy glances hint at a mystery that could unravel the tightly locked doors of Markenmore forever.

A remarkably prolific English writer, he turned out more than 230 books and became one of the best-known detective novelists of his time. His stories mix brisk plotting with a strong sense of place, especially Yorkshire and the world of early 20th-century England.
