Description

The narrator sets off on an over‑ambitious spring trek across the rugged borderlands, eager to circle the area between Wooler and the Scottish line in a single day. What begins as a bright, hopeful morning quickly turns hostile as a sudden April snowstorm swallows the landscape, blanketing tracks and lowering the temperature. Lost amid featureless hills and with night closing in, the traveler must decide whether to press on through the blinding drift or risk an exposed night on the moor.

Just when hope seems dim, a faint glow appears on the horizon and reveals a striking, almost medieval house perched in a shallow valley. Towering battlements, a round turret and high windows set above a stone courtyard give the building an isolated, timeless air. The narrator, clutching a half‑empty flask of whisky, steps toward the light, uncertain whether the shelter will bring rescue or reveal something far stranger.
