In the opening of this seventh volume, the season is at its brightest, yet a sudden storm sweeps over the mountains, leaving rain‑soaked valleys and a sunlit arch that catches Wilhelm’s thoughtful eye. Riding through the weather‑kissed landscape, he encounters a familiar traveller, sparking a brief exchange that drifts from shared memories of a playful river outing to a subtle hint of their differing pasts and religious backgrounds. Their conversation turns philosophical, reminding Wilhelm that the safest course is to focus on the present and the tasks that lie ahead.
Prompted by the stranger’s directions, Wilhelm pushes onward toward the distant estate of Lothario, a place he has been summoned to. He arrives at a striking, irregularly built castle surrounded by gardens, farms and a nearby village, its architecture reflecting practicality more than grandeur. Intrigued and determined, he steps inside a modest inn to seek entry, setting the stage for the next phase of his journey.
