Description

An immigrant teen finds himself alone on a transatlantic voyage after his ailing father collapses and dies in the cramped stateroom of the sailing ship Arcturus. With only a modest sum of English notes and a cryptic note promising a sealed packet to be opened a year later, he must navigate the uncertain waters of New York's bustling port and the unknown kin his father mentioned. The opening chapter sets a stark, compassionate tone as the boy grapples with grief, responsibility, and the urgency of making a new beginning in a foreign land.

Arriving in the great city, the young man quickly discovers that finding work and locating the relatives his father mentioned is far harder than any sea crossing. Alongside bustling streets, cramped tenements, and the gritty world of street vendors, he encounters a diverse cast of characters who test his resolve and shape his emerging identity. The novel follows his struggle to turn a legacy of loss into a chance for independence, offering a vivid portrait of hope and hardship at the turn of the twentieth century.
