Description

Tom Nelson leaves a modest New England farm and heads west with a band of hopeful miners, driven by the promise of gold that has captured the nation’s imagination. At sixteen, he’s sturdy, good‑humored, and already seasoned by the long trek across the plains, joining a seasoned leader and a loyal Scottish friend as they stake claims along a bustling California stream.

The story follows Tom’s early days in the goldfields, where rugged labor, camaraderie, and stubborn optimism shape his character. He learns the hard truth that riches favor the industrious and the patient, while also tasting the thrill of sudden luck that can turn a simple wash of dirt into a glittering find. Through each sunrise over the makeshift camps, Tom’s resolve deepens, hinting at the larger adventures that await the young miner as he strives to carve his own future in the new Eldorado.
