A wandering gentleman from La Mancha spends his days lost in endless tales of chivalry, letting the vivid language of daring knights and impossible quests consume his imagination. The books swell his mind with visions of dragons, enchanted maidens and heroic battles, until the line between story and reality blurs and a gentle madness settles over him. His niece, housekeeper, and the village curate watch with concern as he debates the merits of legendary heroes, their conversations stretching long into the night.
When the old man finally decides to act on the heroic ideals that have haunted him, he fashions a makeshift armor and sets out on a quixotic quest of his own. Accompanied by a loyal, pragmatic companion, he confronts windmills he believes to be fearsome giants and interprets ordinary encounters as grand adventures. The opening of his journey offers a witty, tender look at the power of imagination and the thin thread that separates folly from bravery.
