In the crisp October morning of 1848, the streets of Vienna swell with restless crowds—students brandishing pistols, shopkeepers, artisans, and grimy laborers armed with knives. From a modest window the narrator watches the tide of revolution, noting how the continent trembles under uprisings in France, Italy, Spain and the crumbling Austrian Empire. He and his younger brother Stephen, both proud Hungarians yet loyal to the Habsburg throne, debate the meaning of the revolt while preparing to leave the city.
This uneasy conversation is interrupted by the arrival of John Rakoczy, a charismatic Hungarian with a hint of German blood, whose usually merry demeanor is now shadowed by worry. Rakoczy brings the latest news of the escalating violence and hints at a dangerous choice that could draw the brothers into the heart of the insurrection. As the city’s pulse quickens, the three men find themselves at a crossroads between duty, patriotism, and the chaotic promise of change. The stage is set for a personal and political drama that will test their convictions.
