THE RAPE OF LUCRECE - by William Shakespeare
TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE HENRY WRIOTHESLEY, EARL OF SOUTHAMPTON, and Baron of Titchfield.
THE ARGUMENT.
Set against the turbulent backdrop of early Rome, the drama opens with the ambitious king Tarquin, whose ruthless rise to power leaves the city’s noble families uneasy. At a banquet the Roman aristocrats proudly speak of their wives’ virtues, and Collatinus extols the incomparable chastity of his beloved Lucrece, a woman whose reputation for honor and beauty has become a quiet beacon in a court steeped in intrigue.
When the king’s son, Sextus Tarquin, succumbs to a dangerous desire, he slips into Lucrece’s chamber under the cover of night. The assault shatters her world, and in a desperate bid for justice she summons allies, reveals the crime, and chooses death as her final protest. Her anguished oath and tragic end ignite a fierce resolve among the gathered nobles, setting the city on a path toward rebellion against the tyrannical dynasty.

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
