Tom and Frank sail from New York toward the Bahamas, trading city haze for brilliant turquoise seas. The Gulf Stream sparkles with sapphire and emerald shades, turning the horizon into a living painting. Their excitement is tinged with intrigue, because a puzzling radio voice they once heard hints at smuggler plots and secret codes. Now, as Egg Cay appears on the deck, the boys feel the pull of both tropical wonder and mystery.

In New York, inventor Rawlins has built a self‑contained diving suit that creates its own oxygen, but it cannot communicate under water. Tom, an avid radio hobbyist, suggests adding a tiny underwater telephone, and together they assemble a working prototype in a cramped East River lab. Their first trial reveals two shadowy divers behaving oddly, nudging the boys toward a deeper, submerged investigation.
