The "Forte" cuts a swift line along Africa’s east coast, a naval frigate tasked with choking the slave trade. Captain Brooke and his crew brace for a sudden squall as a dense fog rolls in, and the ship’s topmen scramble to reef the sails. Among them is Jack Villiers, a quick‑witted midshipman who commands the maintop and is loved by his shipmates for his daring spirit.
When a violent gust snaps the main‑sheet, Jack is ripped from the rigging and hurled into the churning sea. The crew launches lifebuoys and a cutter, battling the howling wind and thickening mist in a frantic search that seems hopeless. As the storm finally eases and the fog lifts, the silhouette of the "Forte" reappears, offering a glimmer of hope for the stranded men. The opening pages blend high‑seas adventure with the raw tension of life‑and‑death decisions in a perilous age of sail.
