by Arthur Lee Knight
Born in St. Thomas, Devon, in 1852, Arthur Lee Knight wrote popular adventure fiction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sources agree that he served as a midshipman in the Royal Navy as a teenager, and that experience shaped the authentic naval setting and language of his stories.
He became especially known for boys' adventure books set at sea, including tales of midshipmen, patrols against slave traders, and imperial-era action in far-flung places. Titles associated with him include Leaves from a Middy's Log, The Gunroom Heroes, The Rajah of Monkey Island, and The Mid of the Maintop.
Knight died on July 7, 1944. I couldn't confirm a reliable portrait image of him from the sources I checked, so no author photo is included here.
