Description

A band of restless youths—Jim, Tom, the narrator, and the seasoned Captain Graves—spurn the quiet of their camp for a reckless race across the open plains toward the looming pine that marks the edge of the Grand Canyon. Their captured ponies, restless as fleas, bolt when the captain fires his pistol, and the boys scramble to keep pace, each trying to out‑run the other while keeping a wary eye on the untamed horizon. The banter between the friends reveals a mix of bravado and genuine concern, hinting at the deep bonds forged on previous trails and the looming responsibilities of adulthood. As the dust settles and the sun glints off distant cliffs, the boys glimpse the vast Colorado River, sparking talk of a hidden treasure that might lie among its canyon walls.

Soon the adventurous quartet will trade their racing spirits for a more calculated quest, following rumors of lost riches buried deep within the canyon’s sandstone. Their journey will lead them through rugged mesas, mysterious villages, and the unforgiving river itself, where every bend could conceal both danger and discovery. Along the way, alliances with locals and the lingering presence of hostile forces add tension, promising a test of courage, wit, and the friendships that first set them racing.

Best known for the early-1900s Frontier Boys adventures, this elusive writer produced brisk, action-filled stories for young readers. Very little biographical information appears to survive, which gives the books an extra air of mystery.
