Description

On a bitter November night, former thief Spike Moseley stumbles through London’s foggy Embankment, haunted by a sudden illness and the feeling that someone is tailing him. Desperate to make amends, he seeks out the hard‑hearted Detective‑Inspector Strickland at Scotland Yard, clutching a shaky note that promises a lead on a sinister criminal gang. The uneasy meeting unfolds under the glow of Westminster Bridge, where Spike’s trembling confession hints at a shadowy organization that views violence as divine mandate.

Strickland, already tangled in a high‑profile case and about to be sent abroad, senses a rare chance to strike at the heart of the mystery. The crook’s fragmented words about a mysterious figure who could kill anyone who learns the truth set the stage for a cat‑and‑mouse chase through London’s underbelly. As the fog thickens, both men must decide whether trust can survive the darkness that surrounds them.

About the author

Hearnden Balfour

Hearnden Balfour

A joint pen name used for brisk, entertaining British mysteries, this author identity brought together two women whose lives stretched well beyond the literary world. The books have the easy pace and clever plotting of interwar detective fiction, with a slightly unusual partnership behind them.
