Hearnden Balfour

Hearnden Balfour was the shared pseudonym of English farmer and journalist Beryl “Beb” Hearnden and Lady Eve Balfour. The pair met in 1919, lived and farmed together for many years, and collaborated on several detective novels featuring Inspector Jack Strickland.

Their fiction included The Paper Chase, The Enterprising Burglar, and Anything Might Happen, published in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Outside crime writing, both women were closely connected with farming: Balfour later became a leading pioneer of organic agriculture, while Hearnden continued working as a writer and rural advocate.

Because Hearnden Balfour was a collective pen name rather than a single person, no single author portrait is provided.
