The story opens on a cold December night as Lieutenant Simpson steps onto the Plymouth Express, only to discover a concealed corpse beneath his seat. The victim, a richly dressed woman later identified as the Honorable Mrs. Rupert Carrington, has ties to a powerful American steel magnate, and her sudden death sends shockwaves through the train's passengers. When the famed Belgian detective receives a cryptic note from Halliday, he is drawn into a tangled web of old romances, dubious financial dealings, and a potential scandal that could ruin families.
Poirot joins forces with Halliday, whose personal history with the victim adds a dangerous edge to the investigation. Together they sift through clues in cramped compartments, interrogate suspects ranging from aristocratic husbands to shady adventurers, and wrestle with the lingering scent of chloroform that haunts the lieutenant. As the train lurches toward Plymouth, each revelation brings the detectives closer to uncovering who wanted Mrs. Carrington silenced and why.

Best known for ingenious mysteries and unforgettable detectives, this English writer created Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple and helped define the classic whodunit. Her stories still feel brisk, clever, and wonderfully readable.
