Description

In bustling 17th‑century Naples, a young aristocrat named Octave discovers that his domineering father plans to marry him off to Géronte’s daughter at the very moment he hopes to unite with his true love. He confides his dread to Silvestre, his loyal servant, who sympathises but can offer little guidance. Their frantic exchange sets the stage for a rapid‑fire comedy of misunderstandings, dueling egos, and looming matrimonial contracts.

Enter Scapin, the clever household‑hand whose reputation for mischievous cunning precedes him. Together with a cast of rival fathers, lovelorn youths, and a gypsy girl named Zerbinette, he concocts a series of elaborate ruses aimed at outwitting authority and preserving the lovers’ freedom. The play brims with sharp repartee, slapstick twists, and the timeless delight of a well‑timed deception, promising listeners an engaging portrait of Molière’s masterful blend of satire and heart.

Molière

1622–1673

A master of comedy and satire, this 17th-century playwright turned human weakness into some of the funniest and sharpest drama in French literature. His plays still feel lively today because they poke at vanity, hypocrisy, and self-deception with such clear-eyed wit.
