In a lavish palace hall, the ruler known as King Lir gathers the most powerful men of his realm—dukes, counts, and trusted advisers. Their chatter swirls around shifting loyalties as they weigh the king’s favour toward the Duke of Albania versus the Duke of Cornouaille. The atmosphere bristles with veiled accusations and uneasy alliances, each noble guarding personal ambitions beneath courteous formalities. As tensions rise, a young count, Kent, seeks approval from his peer Glover, while a silent servant watches the drama unfold.
Behind the throne, Lir unveils a personal plan: to marry each of his three daughters to foreign princes, hoping to secure peace and cement his legacy. The daughters must each choose a suitor, a decision that flares jealousy among the visiting French and Burgundian heirs. Court officials like the steward Oswald and the king’s jester scramble to interpret his cryptic orders, adding humor to the tense intrigue. Listeners are drawn into a world where love and power clash within the palace walls.

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
