Description

Sixteen‑year‑old Rupert Rollins has just learned that his modest job at a bustling New York dry‑goods house is ending. The firm, citing a sluggish market, decides to let go of the newest clerks, and Rupert’s five‑dollar‑a‑week wage—his family’s only lifeline—vanishes by week’s end. He returns home to a cramped apartment where his ailing sister Grace and his weary mother lean on his fragile hope, and the weight of their hunger and illness presses heavily on his shoulders.

Determined not to surrender to despair, Rupert resolves to find work wherever opportunity might hide, even if it means scouring the streets for a single orange to lift his sister’s spirits. As he steps out into the bustling city, his resolve is tested by the harsh realities of a world where jobs are scarce and poverty looms. Yet his quiet courage and the promise of a better tomorrow drive him forward, setting the stage for a journey that will shape his future and the fate of those he loves.
