On a bitter Christmas Eve in the capital of Norway, a newly commissioned lieutenant finds himself convalescing far from his family home. The wind howls through bare lime and maple trees while snow blankets the streets of Christiania, and the young officer wrestles with loneliness in a dim, heritage‑filled lodging. Surrounded by two elderly maids whose lives echo an earlier era, he begins to listen to their recollections of town customs and forgotten fairs.
Through the frosted window he watches bustling figures shuffle past the apothecary known as The Swan, their noses reddened by the cold, while the scent of pine and the crackle of a roaring yule‑log fill the modest room. A knock at the door brings Miss Mette, the kindly matron, together with a handful of lively children whose chatter promises simple comfort. In the glow of the stove, the lieutenant is drawn into the quiet rituals and storytelling that define a Norwegian Christmas, offering both a refuge from his melancholy and a glimpse of the season’s enduring charm.
