Description

The story opens as autumn fades into a harsh winter, driving the court of a small principality into its cozy chambers. Prince Sidonie’s ruler, crippled by a persistent gout, watches the world outside grow cold while his mind turns inward, burdened by unnamed anxieties. Into this quiet tension steps Chevalier Boisière, a once‑glorious French courtier now reduced to a frail, toothless gentleman whose sharp wit and polished manners hide a keen intelligence.

Boisière’s arrival sparks a delicate dance of conversation, where the prince’s physical pains mingle with deeper, political worries that echo the season’s chill. Their exchange hints at familial tensions and looming decisions, while the surrounding courtiers busily arrange amusements to fend off the winter’s gloom. Through rich, period detail and the subtle humor of an aging but still vibrant servant, the novel invites listeners into a world where personal suffering and courtly intrigue intertwine, setting the stage for the challenges that lie ahead.
