About the author

Born in Ragnit in East Prussia on August 8, 1810, Julius Bacher studied medicine in Königsberg and worked as a physician after settling there in 1837. After about a decade, he gave up medical practice to focus on writing.

He became known as a German playwright and novelist, and later lived in Berlin, with periods of travel in Switzerland and France. Reference works also note his contributions to Jewish magazines, alongside his fiction and dramatic writing.

Sources consulted agree on the broad outline of his life, though the easily available biographical record is fairly brief. He died in 1889.
