In the winter of 1917, the streets of Kristiania are hushed under a thin veil of snow, and a notorious prisoner, Thomas Busch, is slated for a guarded transfer. Detective Asbjörn Krag, known for his methodical mind, receives an odd, untyped letter that hints at a dark plot involving a local mental institution and an unnamed avenger who claims to “hold justice.” The missive, scented faintly with tobacco and sealed with a worn postmark, pulls Krag into a web of clues that feel both deliberate and haphazard.
As Krag reviews the scheduled transfer and the looming presence of Dr. Kitschener, he senses that ordinary details may hide a deeper motive. The odd typography and the tiny cigar fragment imply a careful sender, perhaps someone close to the case. While the press hails the capture of Busch, an undercurrent of tension suggests that danger may arise from within the very institution meant to safeguard the city.
