Description

A young heroine narrates the tangled aftermath of a family tragedy that began on a fever‑stricken sea voyage. With her father lost to grief and disease, she and her brother are taken in by a kind yet childless merchant, whose honorable guardianship offers a fragile stability. As the merchant prepares for a distant expedition to Cayenne, the sisters are scattered—one sent to a strict convent in Switzerland, the other to an austere household in Verona—where they confront imposing religious tutors and unsettling advances. The story paints a vivid portrait of early‑19th‑century travel, the clash of duty and desire, and the yearning for freedom amid rigid social expectations.

Against this backdrop of loss and relocation, the narrator wrestles with isolation, the oppressive control of a devout aunt, and the dubious attentions of a false‑hearted confessor. Her keen intellect and sharp wit become her sole weapons as she strives to preserve her dignity and discover allies. The first act sets the stage for a suspenseful journey where hidden motives and secret witnesses promise to reshape her destiny.
