Description

In a chilly December by a river near Lisbon, the hard‑working laundress Joaquina returns home carrying an abandoned infant she discovers hidden among the reeds. The tiny, shivering child sparks a mixture of awe and anxiety in her husband João, whose meager earnings barely sustain their own family. As the newborn’s cries cut through the night, Joaquina swiftly seeks help from a neighbor, promising to find a guardian for the fragile life.

The story paints a vivid portrait of rural Portuguese life, from the rattling of the miller’s son’s whistle to the steam rising over a humble hearth. While João worries about the extra burden, Joaquina’s compassion drives her to arrange a meeting with the local regedor, hoping a nobleman might take the child in. The tension between duty, poverty, and generosity offers a poignant glimpse into the choices ordinary people face when the unexpected lands at their doorstep.
