Born in Foz do Douro, Porto, in 1851, Alberto Braga was a Portuguese journalist and writer. He also served as secretary of the Instituto Comercial de Lisboa, and during his career he published literary chronicles in Portuguese and Brazilian newspapers.
As an author, he wrote both plays and short fiction. He is especially remembered for a plain, readable style and for stories rooted in ordinary life, including Contos d'Aldeia and O Engeitado.
Braga died in 1911. Though not widely known today, his work still offers a lively window into Portuguese literary culture and the social world of his time.
