Kun Suomalaisessa Nuijassa puhuttiin ruotsia
A young student from a provincial lyceum sets out for Helsinki in the spring of 1873, travelling by steamship across the icy ribbons of Lake Päijänne and then by train to the bustling capital. The narrative captures the bewildering transition from a tight‑knit countryside where a house is known by its owner’s name, to a city of numbered streets, grand hotels and a university steeped in ceremony. Along the way, the author reflects on the practical hurdles of luggage, the hum of new transport, and the subtle hierarchies that greet a newcomer at the university gates.
Arriving amid lingering celebrations of a recent graduation, the student meets a strikingly attired university caretaker, whose presence hints at the layered social order of academic life. The memoir details the nervous registration process, the division into small study groups, and the historic moment when a pioneering woman, Emma Irene Åström, becomes the first female graduate in Finland. Through vivid observations and modest humor, the work offers a window into the hopes, anxieties, and everyday wonders of 19th‑century Finnish student culture.
