Their ranks are filled with engineers, scholars, photographers and ordinary farmers, each bringing a distinct skill set and a yearning for a fresh start.

The first part of the narrative follows their preparations, departure from Finland and the arduous trek to the Pacific, while interweaving vivid personal recollections from a surviving participant and detailed notes from a contemporary photographer.
