A Finnish delegation of adventurous young men set out in the late 1860s, driven by famine and disease at home and the promise of fertile land across the Amur River in Manchuria. Guided by the imperial proclamation of Alexander II, they plan a daring sea voyage around Africa to reach the Far East, hoping to build a new communal settlement based on shared labor and egalitarian ideals. Their ranks are filled with engineers, scholars, photographers and ordinary farmers, each bringing a distinct skill set and a yearning for a fresh start.
The first part of the narrative follows their preparations, departure from Finland and the arduous trek to the Pacific, while interweaving vivid personal recollections from a surviving participant and detailed notes from a contemporary photographer. Readers gain a clear sense of the expedition’s optimism, the practical challenges of a long sea journey, and the cultural clash that awaits them on the remote banks of the Amur.
