Description

In the regal park of Navarre, the king gathers his three close companions and issues a bold proclamation: for the next three years they will eschew all pleasures, fast, study, and, most crucially, avoid any encounter with women. The experiment is meant to turn the court into a hub of pure scholarship, a test of willpower and intellect. The scholars, especially the quick‑witted Berowne, immediately launch into clever repartee, questioning the feasibility of such strict vows.

Their discipline is quickly challenged when a French delegation arrives, led by a radiant princess and her charming ladies. The presence of the court’s most coveted women turns the scholars’ solemn oath into a battlefield of flirtation and wordplay, as each tries to uphold his vow while the allure of love grows harder to deny. The first act brims with witty exchanges, musical interludes, and clever riddles, setting the tone for a lively contest between duty and desire.

About the author

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare

1564–1616

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
