In the bustling office of Kristiania’s chief of detectives, Asbjörn Krag greets a weary, soot‑blackened mechanic named Karl Adolf Boman. Boman, a father of two who spends his days fixing engines and ferrying passengers, has been summoned by a sharply dressed stranger to repair a troubled benzine motor. The request arrives late one evening, when Boman’s family dinner is interrupted by the mysterious visitor’s urgent promise of good pay.
The stranger, a tall man in a sailor’s jacket and a gold‑trimmed cap, seems more a covert operative than a simple client. He leads Boman away from the familiar docks toward a shadowy stretch of road called Thorvald Meyerinkatu, insisting the engine must be taken there for urgent work. As they travel in silence, Boman senses that the task may involve more than ordinary machinery, setting the stage for a puzzling investigation that will test Krag’s investigative instincts.
