Description

The story opens in a primeval forest of towering beeches and firs, where dusk settles over moss‑laden ground and the faint cry of an owl punctuates the silence. At the edge of the trees stands a solitary, stone‑walled house, its windows cloaked in dark‑green ivy and a weathered crucifix hanging on the gray wall. Inside, a troupe of wandering vagabonds—jovial thieves, a crippled old man, and the flamboyant “Zuckerwastl”—gather around a crude oak table, trading ribald jokes as night falls.

Against this rustic backdrop, the narrator introduces a bitter dispute over stolen goods, revealing a community steeped in superstition and poverty. Their banter hints at deeper anxieties, for the region is still haunted by the recent witch‑hunts that have gripped Würzburg, turning neighbor against neighbor and casting ordinary folk into the jaws of the law. As the strangers settle into the house, the tension between the roguish camaraderie and the looming threat of the inquisitorial judges promises a clash that will test loyalties and fate.
