About the author

Born Franz Xaver Hacker in Nymphenburg near Munich in 1836, he became a Catholic priest and later wrote under the name Franz von Seeburg. He spent his life in Bavaria and died in Munich in 1894.

As an author, he was known for writing in a clear, engaging way that brought historical and religious subjects to general readers. His books included Joseph Haydn, a life of the composer, as well as works such as Die Fugger und ihre Zeit and Das Marienkind.

Though not widely known today outside specialist and library circles, his writing shows a strong interest in making the past feel vivid and approachable. That mix of clerical learning and popular storytelling gave his books a distinctive place in late 19th-century German literature.
