CHAPTER X
Alfred Hardy is a young man of steadfast principles, convinced that marriage should be a tidy partnership of mutual respect, modest comforts and quiet evenings by the fireside. His friend Jimmy Jinks, older and more easy‑going, has never bothered with lofty ideals, preferring a practical approach to life. Their college days are marked by lively debates in which Alfred’s opinions dominate, while Jimmy watches with amused tolerance.
When Alfred finally attempts to put his theory into practice, he arrives unexpectedly with a tiny, flower‑adorned infant he introduces as “Miss Merton.” The sudden appearance of the babe throws Jimmy’s orderly expectations into disarray, leaving him both bewildered and oddly charmed. As the two friends grapple with the surprise, the scene hints at a gentle comedy of mismatched ambitions and the unpredictable ways love can arrive.
