Description

Published in 1804, this richly illustrated volume brings the newly uncovered wall paintings of Herculaneum to a wider audience. The French editors assembled a series of fine copper‑plate engravings, each faithfully reproduced from the original frescoes unearthed during the excavations. Accompanying each image is a concise scholarly note that records the find‑spot, size, and the mythological or everyday scene depicted.

The plates showcase a variety of subjects—from graceful depictions of deities and the Graces to intimate moments of private life, such as children at play with ancient games. One striking example presents a monochrome marble painting that even includes the name of its ancient Greek artist, while another captures a dramatic encounter between a heroic figure and a centaur. The text explains the iconography and offers contemporary interpretations that reflect the latest antiquarian research of the era.

Designed as both a source of pleasure for lovers of classical art and a practical reference for artists and craftsmen, the book serves as an accessible counterpart to the rarer, more expensive Naples edition. Its clear illustrations and insightful commentary make it a valuable tool for anyone interested in the decorative traditions of the ancient world.
