Andy Grant is a top student at the respectable Penhurst Academy, admired for his sharp mind in Latin and Greek and his quiet determination. When a terse telegram arrives demanding his immediate return home, he is torn between his promising future and an urgent family matter. With the support of his beloved mentor, Dr. Crabb, Andy obtains permission to leave the school for the first time in months.
The train ride to Arden introduces him to familiar faces, like the neighbor boy Roland, whose cheerful greeting underscores the ordinary world Andy is about to leave behind. As the countryside rolls past, Andy wrestles with doubts about his family's wellbeing and the responsibilities that may fall on his young shoulders. The opening sets a tone of earnest duty and hints that his resolve will be tested in ways that demand the very pluck for which he is named.
