Description

The opening drifts into a rambling monologue that transforms a cramped chamber into a stage for memory. A self‑styled Florestan narrates among damp walls, spider silk, and the ghostly presence of forgotten friends—Luise the shop‑girl, the young Dorothea, the wandering Emma and Olga—each introduced with a mixture of affection and irony. The prose layers poetic quotations, telegram‑like snippets, and theatrical asides, creating a collage that feels both intimate diary and experimental play.

Within this feverish tableau the narrator summons a chorus of voices—strange lovers in lavender stockings, a gallant who boasts of “real feeling,” a bewildered stranger who suddenly bursts into storytelling. As sunlight floods the room in March, the characters hover on the brink of a performance that promises a secret plan, while Florestan prepares to recount a drama that has yet to reach its climax. Listeners are invited to wander through the shifting scenery, feeling the tension between youthful yearning and the weight of looming adulthood.
