Winston Churchill

1871–1947

A hugely popular American novelist in the early 1900s, he wrote historical fiction and political novels that spoke to the mood of Progressive Era readers. Though often overshadowed by the better-known British statesman of the same name, his books were major bestsellers in their day.

About the author

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1871, Winston Churchill became one of the most widely read American novelists of the early twentieth century. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1894, but it was writing that brought him lasting fame.

His breakthrough came with Richard Carvel in 1899, followed by other successful novels including The Crisis, The Crossing, and Coniston. His fiction often blended history, politics, and social change, which helped make him especially popular with readers in the years before World War I.

Later in life, he turned away from fiction and wrote more directly about religion and public questions. He died in Florida in 1947, remembered as a novelist who once stood at the center of American literary popularity, even if his name is now more often linked with someone else.
