Winston Churchill

1871–1947

Best known for historical novels that once drew a huge American readership, this Winston Churchill was a very different figure from the British statesman who shared his name. His books mixed adventure, politics, and social observation, and several became major bestsellers in the early 1900s.

About the author

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 10, 1871, Winston Churchill graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1894 before turning to fiction. He published The Celebrity in 1898, and soon found a wide audience with popular novels including Richard Carvel, The Crisis, and The Crossing.

His fiction was especially known for historical settings and strong storytelling, and at the height of his career he was one of the most widely read American novelists of his day. Although he is less well remembered now, reference sources still note the remarkable popularity his novels enjoyed in the early twentieth century.

Churchill died in Winter Park, Florida, on March 12, 1947. He is often remembered today partly because his name is so easily confused with that of Sir Winston Churchill, but he built a successful literary career of his own.
